Scotland's engineering employers are spread across the central belt, Fife, the Lothians and the north east, and many of them are competing for the same small pool of time-served machinists and inspectors. The best of those people are rarely looking at job boards: they are in work, and they move when someone gives them a good reason.

That is why we spend time on the detail that decides whether someone moves: the machines and controls they will run, the tolerances, the shift pattern and overtime, and the travel. A role that reads well on paper but means an extra hour in the car each day will not hold a good candidate.
